Sustainability at the BIG BANG KI Festival

At the BIG BANG KI Festival, sustainability is not a side issue – it is part of our core values. We follow the guidelines for sustainable event management issued by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUV) and the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) and implement a wide range of measures to minimize our ecological footprint.

Our concrete measures at a glance:

Digital Processes & Mobility

  • All participant management – from invitation to registration to on-site check-in – is completely digital.
  • Participants receive information on how to travel to the event in a climate-friendly way, especially by train.
  • All our Europe-wide business travel is primarily organized via rail or bus.
  • Accommodations organized by the event team are within a maximum radius of 3 km from the venue and are well connected to public transportation.
  • Hotels are powered by renewable energy.

Catering & Food

  • We collaborate with a regional catering partner.
  • At least 60% of all food comes from seasonal and regional sources.
  • Catering is planned according to actual demand to avoid food waste. Leftover food can be taken home by participants.

Equipment & Technology

  • All furniture, booths, and equipment are reused.
  • We rely on regional service providers wherever possible.
  • For plant-based decorations, we focus on regional and seasonal options.
  • All event lighting uses energy-saving LED technology.
  • Our technical crew receives a dedicated energy-saving briefing.

Local Partners & Social Responsibility

  • Over 80% of the event staff (e.g., hosts, security, photographers) are based in Berlin.
  • The event is organized together with more than two certified Sustainable Partners from the Sustainable Meetings Berlin network.

Our Guiding Principle: The SDGs as Our Compass

In all our actions and decisions, we are fundamentally guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These 17 goals for sustainable development serve as our compass to approach ecological, social, and economic responsibility in a holistic way – and to put this into practice as part of the Big Bang KI Festival.
